The ICT KTN is holding a series of three workshops with interrelated topics to determine a strategy for R&D in the sector for the next 5 years.

This is a new activity to provide a Strategy for long-term R&D opportunities for ICT in the UK. It involves Industry, Academia, the Government, the Technology Strategy Board, EPSRC and other bodies.

There have been significant changes in both the supply and demand aspects of the ICT business in recent years and there are gaps in the supply chain where action could be taken to rectify the situation. The intensity of R&D in the UK varies significantly across the sector and is a cause for concern. ‘ICT’ covers communications, computing, and IT in general, although one of the changes taking place is the continual blurring of these divisions

In these workshops we wish to encompass as many topics as our collective imaginations can think of! The objective is to stimulate R&D that covers not only the evolution of existing technologies but also new, more speculative, research areas that offer the promise of significant benefits to the industry at all levels of the supply chain.

We are looking for new ideas – disruptive technologies and directions  -- unanswered questions

This first workshop will concentrate on the networks and layers of the ICT infrastructure, switching and routing, including:

• New architectures for networks

• Low energy solutions for networks of all types

• Scalability of networks to meet future demand

• Ways forward for improved M2M and Internet-of-Things networks

• Beyond IPv6
